St. Barnabas Anglican Church in Victoria, B.C., is a prayerful, thoughtful, loving and diverse community of people seeking to live out their Christian faith within the Anglo-Catholic tradition of reverence and practice.
At St Barnabas, we strive in all that we do to reflect our catholic and sacramental faith, that God gave himself fully in Christ Jesus, in the good news of the Holy Scriptures and in the Sacraments, and in the goodness of creation. The world is charged with the grandeur of God (G.M. Hopkins), and we offer our common life in a spirit of thanksgiving for God’s goodness: every program, every craft, every meal shared, every encounter, every hymn, every day.
Things to look for:
Sunday Worship: Colour and ritual, music and beauty, Scripture-based preaching, a loving, prayerful, and generous community, giving thanks for God’s gift of himself in word and sacrament and in the love that binds us as one body.
Ministries for families and Children: Active Montessori-based Sunday School curricula for children of all ages; a Wednesday morning Waldorf-inspired play-group for pre-school aged kids with their caregivers; youth group for younger teens and ‘philosophy discussion group for older teens; seasonal programming such as Star Sunday Christmas crafting fair; Advent Spiral; St Martin’s Day lantern walk; First Communion and Confirmation preparation; Grandparents Tea; youth camps, and many more opportunities for learning and making friends.
The River playgroup.
Ministries for Adults: Weekly Bible study and art and music meditations; monthly women’s music and movement meditation; the ‘Barnaboys’ men’s breakfast meetings; Tea Talks – featuring home-made high tea with expert-lead discussion on timely topics; mothers’ prayer group.
Hospitality Ministries: All are welcome and encouraged to break bread together at our Sunday Community Lunch (directly following the 10:30 Mass). Also open to all is the Friday Communion food outreach and fellowship (weekly, 9 am), as are our annual picnic and garden party. Participation in our Refugee sponsorship program and our Christmas hamper outreach is always also very welcome.
