Theatre in Lent - A tradition lives on.
The Way of the Cross is a devotional drama found within a longer play called The Mystery of the Finding of the Cross. Describing the journey of St. Helena, this play was written and translated from the French into beautifully poetic period English in the 1930’s. In it, St, Helena asks of some passing roadside players, “Show me the way of tears, the temple, the praetorium, calvary and the tomb . . .” The Way of the Cross is their response to her request and follows the holy journey to the cross, touching each of the fourteen stations. The actors present many characters from the Passion story, some familiar and some not, in an attempt to bring to our experience some sense of our complicity in the crucifixion.
