Jasmin O’Brian, Community Life Minister
Our annual crafting event in Advent called “Star Sunday” has now been running for nine years! At our first Star Sunday we were basically snowed in and even though only a few families could make it through the snow to come everybody loved it so much that it became an annual event. We now have over 300 children attending, with many craft stations in the hall, candle dipping in the church, cookie decorating in the kitchen, silk painting in the Sunday school room upstairs, an elves and angels workshop in the office and Mary’s enchanted garden in the nursery. On the day of Star Sunday we have around 60 volunteers involved, with set up and clean up, at the stations, floaters and greeters.
But putting on an event like Star Sunday starts actually in October and also involves the work of many helpers. The things that need to get done early are advertising, securing sponsors and donations, sourcing material and crafts, and recruiting volunteers. Last Star Sunday “costed” St. Barnabas $1500, but with donations from local businesses and the donations on the day there were actually no net costs for St. Barnabas! That is why the planning work to put on Star Sunday is so important.
We will have a short meeting after lunch today for anybody who is interested in being part of the panning team for Star Sunday – to keep this great event running for many years to come! If you can’t join us today, but would still like to help in any capacity, please call or email the Community Life Minister or the church office – we need as many people helping as possible!
